HudhudX  /  Research platform

Urban Lab

Urban Lab is HudhudX’s platform for independent research, experimentation and knowledge development. It is being established as the research base for the organisation’s planning, analysis and mapping work.

Status  In development

No datasets, papers or tools have been published yet.

LRole within HudhudX

A research platform that runs beneath all three service areas.

Urban Lab is not a fourth service. It is where questions raised by planning, research and mapping work can be developed properly: documented, examined and, where appropriate, published.

Findings, datasets and methods then return to the service areas, so that practice and research inform each other.

L1–L6Areas of activity

Six areas of activity, all at the development stage.

  1. L1

    Independent urban research

Self-directed research on urban conditions and development issues, chosen for their relevance to the cities and settlements in which HudhudX works.

    Intended outputsresearch notes and studies

  2. L2

    Urban datasets and knowledge resources

Compilation and documentation of spatial and statistical information on urban areas, with clear records of source, method and limitations.

Intended outputsdocumented datasets and reference resources

  3. L3

    Research publications and working papers

Working papers and publications that set out methods, data and findings so that others can examine them.

Intended outputsworking papers and research publications

  4. L4

    Experimental mapping and visualisation

Trials of new ways to map, model and present urban information, including approaches not yet suited to routine deliverables.

Intended outputsexperimental maps and visual studies

  5. L5

Development and testing of analytical methods

Design, testing and comparison of methods for density, land-use, growth and demographic analysis, with attention to what each method can and cannot show.

Intended outputsmethod notes and test results

  6. L6

    Knowledge exchange and research collaboration

Collaboration with researchers, institutions and practitioners, and exchange of methods and findings.

Intended outputscollaborative studies and knowledge-sharing activities

—Working principles

How Urban Lab intends to work.

  1. State the method

Each output should say how it was produced: sources, steps and assumptions.

  2. State the limits

Gaps, uncertainty and limitations in the data are reported alongside the results.

  3. Keep evidence and illustration apart

Illustrative graphics, including those on this website, are labelled as such and are not presented as findings.

  4. Allow review

Methods and working papers are intended to be available for comment by researchers and practitioners.

Researchers, institutions and practitioners interested in collaboration or knowledge exchange are welcome to get in touch.
